The lecture course will give participants an overview and analysis of one of the most fascinating parts of early modern European history: The Thirty Years War including the crises leading up to it, as well as the attempts at ending it, which was finally achieved in 1648 with the treaties of Westphalia. Furthermore, the lectures will suggest how a better understanding of the Thirty Years War and the successful achievement of peace at the congress of Westphalia can be of use in considering possible solutions to today’s most intractable geopolitical problems, first and foremost the series of conflicts currently afflicting the Middle East.
